The 5th edition of Let’s Science!: the appointment with scientific dissemination promoted by IBSA Foundation is back

Involving the new generations by bringing them closer to science: Let’s Science! – the creative path of scientific dissemination promoted by the IBSA Foundation in collaboration with the Canton Ticino Department of Education, Culture and Sport (DECS) continues successfully.

Held from 12 to 17 September, the fifth edition aimed at providing middle school kids with accurate scientific information through a simple and understandable language: comics. Through experiential and creative workshops, the project gave the opportunity to examine in depth scientific topics and learn in detail some professions in the medical, research and creative fields.

THE VOLUMES OF THE LET’S SCIENCE! SERIES

From Monday 12 to Friday 16 September, in the evocative setting of Villa Saroli in Lugano (CH), some Canton Ticino middle school classes participated in workshops with the scientists and cartoonists who wrote the last two volumes of the series Let’s Science!, published by Carocci Editore. Indeed, the project provided for the creation of new volumes of the homonymous series, which now consists of 10 booklets, which combine the simple and captivating language of comics with the authoritativeness of the scientific jargon.

In the school year 2021/2022, some Ticino middle schools had the opportunity to work closely with Rome’s Scuola Romana dei Fumetti and experts in scientific subjects to draft the last two volumes: Come circola la vita (“The circle of life”) and Lo smartphone: alleato o nemico? (“Smartphone: an ally or an enemy?”). A free exhibition open to the public was also set up at Villa Saroli, with the tables of the 10 volumes of the series.

THE CONTAGION CONTEST – TELL THE PANDEMIC WITH A COMIC

In addition to the 10 volumes of Let’s Science!, the three comics which won the Contagion contest were also exhibited at Villa Saroli. The contest, open to Ticino middle schools from September 2021 to April 2022, allowed the younger generations to tell, through comics, how they experienced the difficult period of COVID-19 health emergency. The competition saw a great participation: 28 classes from 16 different Ticino schools, for a total of over 100 projects. The three winning classes received a prize to be used for school trips.

DIGITAL BETWEEN ILLUSION AND REALITY

At the end of the week, on Saturday, September 17, the event Digitale: tra illusione e realtà (“Digital: between illusion and reality”) was held at the LAC – Lugano Arte e Cultura. Aimed at young people and families, the event was an invitation to question the illusions of the web and our physical and mental health.

Mentalist Federico Soldati accompanied the participants on a path of mind reading illusion, to understand in an alternative and original way how to navigate the web in the best and safest way. Laura Marcianopost-doc researcher in Well-being and digital media – and other web experts then helped to understand the risks and opportunities of digital technology.

Like every year, Let’s Science! proved to be an important appointment for Ticino schools. This project, in fact, goes far beyond mere didactic learning, since it also represents an effective orientation tool for the future career choices of the kids.

In Canton Ticino, the Let’s Science! format turned out to be very original, immediately enjoying a considerable success. Given the enthusiasm with which young students, their teachers and all the people involved welcomed the project, IBSA Foundation will work in synergy with the Group’s headquarters and subsidiaries to disseminate it internationally.
