40 plus 40: celebrating the history and imagining the future

2025 marks a year of celebrations for IBSA, as it commemorates forty years since its current President and CEO Arturo Licenziati acquired the company, in 1985.

It was August 19, 1985, when Arturo Licenziati, “unknown, foreigner, without any parental ties”, took the helm of the Ticino company IBSA (Institut Biochimique SA), founded in Lugano in 1945, completely redefining its vision and strategy.

From the very beginning of this adventure, Arturo Licenziati has been able to carry forward his peculiar way of doing business: not going with the flow, but tracing a unique path based on innovation, transformation and the creation of drugs in the best form.

This double anniversary – 80 years since the establishment of the IBSA name and 40 years of Dr. Arturo Licenziati’s leadership – is well represented by an evocative logo, designed to symbolise the link between the past and the future. A logo that, this year, will mark all planned communication activities of IBSA Group.

FORTY YEARS OF VISION AND GROWTH

Over the years I have become convinced”, explained Licenziati, “that the rapid and solid growth and development experienced by the company are due to four factors, that I like to call the 4 Cs”.

  • Commitment to pursuing the set objectives;
  • the Courage to make choices – even against the general trend – and take difficult decisions;
  • Cleverness, meaning the ability to understand the market and to be one step ahead of others; 
  • Chance, since the opportunity to exploit events and situations is critical, in order to collect the outcomes of one’s commitment.

Four principles that charted the course of a company that has never stopped believing in its development; four principles that transformed a small pharmaceutical laboratory in crisis in a multinational corporation. Indeed, IBSA has been able to build an international presence by opening 20 subsidiaries and a solid network of distributors across five continents, establishing itself in over 90 countries with ten therapeutic areas.
