A model for the future: sustainable mobility

Every day millions of vehicles clog the roads, causing hours of delay and much stress for drivers. In addition to making travel unsustainable, road congestion is one of the main sources of air pollution.

A problem also affecting Canton Ticino – the southern part of Switzerland, where IBSA has its headquarters – where traffic poses an increasingly significant challenge, considering the over 250,000 people who work and move around the area. Companies are a determining factor in this situation: indeed, they can significantly contribute to reducing traffic by activating sustainable mobility policies and raising awareness among their employees.

This was precisely the subject of the meeting that was held last February in Lugano, organised by the Territorial Department of Canton of Ticino with the aim of studying and sharing strategies and experiences in order to conceive a development plan in harmony with both people and the environment.

IBSA – which was among the parties invited to share their model – presented its approach to ESG policies and mobility management. For over ten years, in fact, IBSA has been urging its employees to adopt an environmentally friendly behaviour, not only in the workplace, but also in daily life.

A philosophy that translates into targeted actions, ranging from incentives for sustainable mobility to the creation of digital tools dedicated to travel management, in line with the sustainability manifesto, which permeates IBSA’s ESG activities.

THE CHANGE ALSO COMES THROUGH MOBILITY

To promote a lasting change, IBSA combined its mobility strategies with a set of actions aimed at promoting new habits and overcoming the consolidated trend towards individual car use.

Mobility

Among the main initiatives:

  • Company shuttles for employees, with cross-border connections and local transports
  • Co-financing of season tickets (financial support for the purchase of public transport passes and for bike sharing)
  • Carpooling, with priority access to parking for those sharing a car with their colleagues
  • App IBSA GO (an application dedicated to corporate mobility management, with real-time information and incentives for sustainable travel)
  • Bikecoin and active mobility (a system of score and rewards for those who use bicycles and e-scooters or travel on foot)
  • Parking management (daily reservations and parking fees, with the creation of a mobility fund financed by the proceeds)

In 2024, the initiatives introduced by IBSA over the last ten years led to a 30% reduction in private car use, with a consequent 25-30% decrease in CO2 emissions.

A CULTURAL CHANGE FOR AN ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

If infrastructure and services are essential, the real turning point still is the change in habits. IBSA’s commitment to reducing environmental impact is part of a long-term vision aimed at a cultural change.

For this reason, in addition to implementing concrete solutions, IBSA operated to disseminate a new awareness, in which choosing a sustainable alternative is actually an opportunity to improve the quality of life for everyone.
